It was working very intermittently. The cause of that glitch has been removed.

Ahh so there is a gateway switch for PayPal/braintree?

After the gateway was replaced why some of my debit cards could not be used for donations even though at the gateway before it worked fine

No, still PayPal.

There was an unrelated plugin that was spawning a ton of PHP processes that got stuck in SYN_WAIT state.

If you message me your info I can see if there is any record of why your cards failed.
