Youtube freezes while playing or will not play

running pihole v5.3.1, adminlte v5.5 and ftl v5.8.1 on a raspberry pi 3b. I just ran an update on this before posting but had the same problem. the issue I having is youtube videos will play MOST TIMES. other times, the video freezes while playing (reloading the page or moving to next video in playlist then back to problem will SOMETIMES resolve the issue) and yet other times the video will not play at all. I would only see the spinning circle for hours (I left a video on overnite to see if the problem was network congestion/buffering would eventually catch up. nope). when I use the disable function for 30 secs in the admin area, any video starts up no problem. so I expect the problem to be in my config as opposed to the package. I have my upstream dns set to quad9 (filtered + ecs) and under custom 127.0.0.1#5335. any suggestion on how I can get consistent play from youtube? I'd hate to have to whitelist it but I'm thinking a change on youtube is causing the config that has worked for months on end without a problem to now be a pain.

This sounds like overblocking. How many domains does your gravity contain?

Use the query log to figure out which domain isn't resolved the next time a video doesn't play.

thank you for the reply, esp so quickly. I actually noticed something I forgotten I changed. I actually did whitelist youtube.com. I was testing that a few weeks ago but go distracted by the day job and completely forgot that entry was made and left active.

I am going to test the domains based on the query logs as suggested but just to add complete information, youtube.com is whitelisted

Usually content is loaded from something like *.googlevideo.com and others....

gotcha. I am going to check. I wanted to add the other note so anyone in the future reading things has a better understanding of how the pieces fit together.

at this min, videos are working fine. it almost seems around 14:00 things start go downhill for a few hours. normally I run somethings in the background but today I have an all hands so (in theory) I need to pay attention to a screen instead of doing my normal real work where I have background videos. so based on that, I will look at 10:25 and 11:20 vs when an issue rears its head

just wanted to give a final update. yubiuser for the win on how to solve the problem. it seems youtube changes sources at certain points. once I looked at the log as suggested at a point I could not access videos I found googlevideo.com being blocked. adding the domain in my whitelist has caused all videos to play at point of the day/nite. I waited a few days to make sure that was the solution and since that update, 0 problems with youtube. thanks for the help
