Trying to configure a BPI-R4 running OpenWRT to use Pi-Hole... and failing

Please follow the below template, it will help us to help you!

If you are Experiencing issues with a Pi-hole install that has non-standard elements (e.g you are using nginx instead of lighttpd, or there is some other aspect of your install that is customised) - please use the Community Help category.

Expected Behaviour:

OpenWRT directing DNS traffic through Pi-Hole

Actual Behaviour:

I've configured Pi-Hole, replaced the DNS for the LAN in OpenWRT with the PiHole address, disabled peer dns, disabled DNSMASQ on 'lo', and frankly other things I can't remember now having thrown so much at the wall. As of right now it shows I'm pointed to the Pi-Hole, but something is blocking the requests and I can't figure out what. My Wi-Fi dropped and now I connect it says no internet, using DIG for google results in:

communications error to 1.1.1.1#53: connection refused

while pings to 8.8.8.8 work. Pinging google.com gives:

Destination unreachable: Port unreachable
