Hi there.
Im just wondering if i can use a travel router with my rasberry 4 pi hole by conecting it trough the lan port on the travel router.
A search of the forum will show that people are using travel routers with Pi-hole.
I actually carry a small travel router and Pi Zero W. The travel router double NATs an existing WiFi network to a new private LAN, and all my devices (and my wife's if she is with me) connect to the travel router and are on Pi-hole.
For me, this was easier than putting VPN software and credentials on all the devices (laptop, 2 iPads, 2 phones, etc.)
I can also run this in the car, using a phone as the internet source.
In another post @jfb you mention you carry a travel router and Pi Zero W running Pi-hole. This provides a convenient way to have everyone travelling on the same local network and means that their devices are already set up to connect to it no matter where they travel.
This has some advantages – no need to configure VPN clients on different devices, iOS, Android, Windows, etc, and no need to expose and maintain any VPN services back home.
Then it's just a case of putting the travel router onlin…
User @AerialShorts made one and created a nice case for it to all fit into, which you can 3D print
I saw a post about a travel Pi-Hole with a TPLink AC750 so built my own and am using it right now. It works great! (I can’t put the user in as a reference since new here in the forum, but wanted to give credit to JFB and thank them for the information that led me to make my own. )
I drew up a case for the combo that includes a fan if anyone is interested and has a 3D printer or access to one.
The box has space for a 40x40x10mm fan as well but it doesn’t seem to really need one. Temps sta…
You'll need to refer to the instructions for your specific travel router to determine what it's capable of, but generally you want your Pi-hole and clients on the router on their own subnet, and the WAN side is connected to your guest network.
