Safe settings?

I recently installed Pi-Hole on virtualized Ubuntu 16.04. I am using it to filter ads from my home wlan. Installation was really easy, but after a wile I have run into a problem on everyday usage.

In short quite a lot of pages implement JavaScipt based structures, sometimes related to ads, sometimes to tracking (like www.google-analytics.com). Problem is that unless you will do heavy whitelisting, you will have problems of pages pending for blocked scripts that never reply, sometimes pages not opening at all and so on.

I have tried to overcome this problem by whitelisting, but my whitelist keeps on growing and growing (100+ domains already). I live on Finland and to do first whitelist tuneup I did browse trough top 100 web publications used here, and added whitelists to get those functioning, but in order to keep usability I actually have to tune the whitelist a lot.

I would be ready to accept some level of tracking and ads getting trough for usabilitys sake. Could it be possible to have “Maximum usability” settings or some kind of ready made whitelist for this purpose available?

We source all of our lists from third parties (and yes, some of them have been overzealous). We try to pick the most reliable lists to block the most ads without obstructing normal browsing, but since we don't control the lists, it's a little out of our hands.

Have you tried modifying which lists are used? That's probably your best bet for fine tuning the install to suit your needs.

Hi, actually the new version of pi-hole seems to fix almost all of the problems I had with the scripts-pending.
I did do an fresh install with newest version and with it everything works very fine, and I have not needed to use white listing practically at all.

So this request can be closed as solved :). Either the new version works better with scripts or there was something wrong with my previous install.

We did not change anything at that end as it was not clear where the changes would have to be made. Glad that it is now working for you!
