After several weeks, Pi-hole finally started working with my Gen6 AirPort Extreme. Honestly, I don't know what I did differently. After trying several times to make the Pi-hole my DNS on the AirPort Extreme, I stopped trying and just set the DNS on my Mac to the Pi-hole. Yesterday I tried setting the DNS on the AirPort Extreme to the Pi-hole and it all worked. Maybe I wasn't holding my mouth right the first several times? I don't know.
While doing the above, I realized that my AirPort Extreme is dated. Although it is the latest (and last) model, it is eight years old and needs to be upgraded. While researching the Pi-hole on YouTube, I came across Ubiquiti's Unifi networking product line. I initially ordered a UDM but am going to return it and use the UDM Pro (future expansion capability).
While researching, the Unifi line, I realized I really should be using a VPN...
I'm also going to re-wire the house upgrading from Cat5 to Cat6 and run all drops back to a proper wiring closet to a proper, 19" wall-mount, 6U bracket.
(Is it just me or am I falling [with increasing acceleration] down the rabbit hole?)
I've tried ExpressVPN in the past but it throttled back my ISP connection from 100 Mbps to about 10 Mbps so I cancelled the subscription and gave up. This was a year or so ago. I've since been searching how to use my Pi-hole with a VPN and would like to use the same RPi (an RPi 4 / 4 GB RAM).
While researching that topic, I have found Pi-VPN, OpenVPN, PIA VPN, etc., etc. Looking at PiVPN, it appears to use OpenVPN. However, when researching PIA, it too seems to use OpenVPN (or can at least be set up to use OpenVPN). Is OpenVPN a "standard" and "everyone" uses OpenVPN or is OpenVPN its own VPN?
Would it be better to install a VPN on its own RPi? If so, do I point the Pi-hole to the VPN or the VPN to the Pi-hole?
Should I use a VPN with the UDM? If I use it with the UDM, I'm having a hard time finding documentation on doing that.
I know those are a lot of questions but questions keep popping up the further down the rabbit hole I go.
