Pi-hole causing interference with Mozilla VPN

Expected Behavior:

I'm able to use Mozilla VPN on the same network as my Pi-hole without loading issues.

Quick facts:

  • OS: Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS
  • Hardware: HYUNDAI Mini PC
  • Router: tp-link AC1200

Actual Behavior:

When I'm connected to the same router as my Pi-hole, Mozilla VPN on my Mac will show bad network conditions and temporarily stop loading about every 2–5 minutes.

Some relevant notes:

  • The Pi-hole is running fine when I connect directly to the network without Mozilla VPN.
  • The loading issue does not happen with other VPNs, like Proton or iCloud Private Relay.
  • I am not trying to use Pi-hole + VPN (like mentioned here). I am simply trying to use Mozilla VPN on my home Wi-Fi like a regular user would.

Things I've tried

  • Updating the DNS settings in Pi-hole to use Google, OpenDNS, and Cloudflare.
  • Setting Mozilla VPN to use Cloudflare for DNS.
  • Disabling blocking (no change).
  • Disabling IPv6 on the router.

Any help is much appreciated!

Commonly, VPN service providers forcefully redirect DNS traffic to their own DNS servers in an effort to avoid DNS leakage.

You should inquire with your VPN provider's support on further details on if and how it would be possible to use a custom DNS server with their service.

Hey Bucking_Horn, thanks for the info! Mozilla VPN does allow custom DNS servers, and pointing it to my Pi-hole for DNS did the trick. You rock!
