I have been trying to setup a pihole for a while now. I am starting to believe that the problem lies with the router I have, being a Spectrum model SAX1V1S, since it requires a secondary DNS when using custom DNS settings. Currently in the DNS settings I have the pihole’s IP as the primary DNS, and 8.8.8.8 as the secondary DNS (which I found is the best to use in this situation). I have even tried setting up the “clients” function in the Pihole so all the devices are pointed towards the pihole.

Actual Behaviour:

since I setup the pihole, I have only received 12 queries. I used this handy video by WesOps to help set up the pihole: https://youtu.be/d_3h5n9mPdI?si=EFEytuJQRgS4-jQK In his video, when he sets the main DNS for his wifi, the queries come flooding in. When I set the DNS on my router, I get none. I would really appreciate the help anyone can give me! (Also, buying a new router is sadly not an option.)

Don’’t know anything about your router.

Any chance you can enter the Pi-hole hosts IP twice?

The other option I can think of is to configure your devices DNS manually, and set them to the Pi-hole host directly.

There may be other options, but none are coming to mind.

sadly, in the spectrum router setup (which runs through the “MySpectrum” mobile app), it does not allow you to enter the Pihole’s ip address twice.

Don’t do this. Try these in order:

  • Enter an unused IP from your LAN range in the second spot
  • Enter 0.0.0.0 in the second spot.

thank you for the help, but I’m afraid neither of those steps worked. When I set the secondary DNS to an unused IP from my LAN range, the internet stopped working entirely, with webpages not loading due to “ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED”.

When I tried setting the secondary DNS to 0.0.0.0, the MySpectrum app won’t let me, saying that the DNS needs to be in between 1.0.0.0 and 255.255.255.255.

any further help would be greatly appreciated!

I’m starting to think that pihole might not work with the router I have
