Expected Behaviour:
Hello, my newly bought raspberry pi zero v1.3 arrived today and i tried to follow the somewhat outdated tutorial on the LTT forum. I installed everything and have the device hooked up on my router. The router says its online.
When i try to open the web interface through firefox it says the site coudlnt be found and isnt available.
I want to inform you that im a noob in this type of thing, i tried using linux a few years ago and was plagued with bugs and unoptimized apps, which is why i went back to windows.
I want to use the web interface to see what ad sites are blocked and maybe manually add some
Operating: System Raspberry Pi OS Lite
Hardware: Raspberry Pi Zero v1.3
Docker compose file or Docker run command
no clue what that is
Docker engine version
this neither
Actual Behaviour:
As mentioned before i cant access the interface nor does it block ads yet. Please be patient with me, i know nothing about this yet
You have Pi-hole installed and running. You have it on bare metal (no docker container) on Raspbian 12 (Bookworm). So far, so good.
But, it doesn't appear that you have configured your router or network clients to use Pi-hole as the DNS server.
From your debug log, your Pi-hole is at IP 192.168.178.128.
You will need to configure your fritz.box or individual clients to use this IP for DNS. Or, if you choose, you can use Pi-hole as your DHCP server (setup via the web admin GUI) and Pi-hole will offer itself as DNS server to any network DHCP clients.
Your fritz.box is currently offering itself as DNS server:
dns-server: 192.168.178.1
What is the complete URL you are using?
Does the following work?
http://192.168.178.128/admin
From a client on your network with either a terminal or a command prompt, what are the complete outputs of the following:
Hello! Thanks for the quick answer. This link actually opened up the panel for me- Thats awesome. I used the same link without the /admin, which went to nothing.
So thats one problem solved Thanks. It says it blocked 50 queries- maybe my list doesnt contain regional ads, thus i still get a ton on yt?
I did try to use my Pi-hole as the dns server but it wouldt remove ads and for some sites even give the same problem with the site not responding.
Regarding the configuration on individual clients i had some problems too.
My phone only lets me choose a "private DNS" where i have to input a Hostname- Neither the IPv4 nor the IPv6 worked, it wouldnt let me save.
On my desktop, i switched to manual DNS servers with the IPs it told me to use but it doesnt seem to do much. I still get ads on YT both on the front page and in front of videos. As mentioned above, it seems to get rid of some ads. Using a ad-infested website, there are empty spaces where ads would be, but a huge ad banner on top of the site is still there.
You said i run it without a docker container- what would that do for me?
Update: I added some more blocklists. i´ll see what happens
I think the raspberry does what its supposed to, it just doesnt know what to block yet.
Oh, bummer! I actually use Firefox and ublock origin paired with sponsorblock. i just wanted to have a way to block the ads on my TV. Too bad they use the same server ^^
ok, understood - Thanks So i need to find the actual settings to change the DNS.
Perfect! I guess ill have to see how much it helps me and my partner on the regular. I personally have done a lot to get rid of ads even on my smartphone but maybe my partner will be able to get more of the benefits.
