Install Fails on Ubuntu 17.04

I have the exact same problem, install seems ok, but theres nothing in /etc/pihole, theres no logs
and I get Failed to open log file. Check permissions! over and over in the admin web interface
there is no pihole in /opt/
I tried reinstalling.
OS Ubntu 17.04 zesty

For me, you have to go into /etc/.pihole (note the . ) to run pihole -d and it gives:
kodiserver@kodiserver:/etc/.pihole$ ./pihole -d
./pihole: line 59: /opt/pihole/piholeDebug.sh: No such file or directory
kodiserver@kodiserver:/etc/.pihole$

What is the output of sudo apt upgrade? Also, try installing the packages the installer marked for installation.
