How to edit external.conf to override lightpd.conf default port

i searched everywhere but cannot find a way to preserve my custom port in the lightpd config file, it resets after an update

Custom ports are not well supported currently. You have to change lighttpd.conf, not external.conf. Custom ports will be better supported when the new web interface and API are released.
