How configure pi-hole as dns server on Android Pie?

hi,

i am using pi-hole and manually assign devices that need to be "protected" by pi-hole.

It works perfectly on my Mac and chromebooks but I cannot get it to work on my Android Pixel Phone running the newest Android Pie. Reason for that seems to be that Android Pie lets me define a "private DNS" but only as an url such as www.test.de and not as an IP address.

Anyone has an advice how to get it running on my Android phone running Android Pie?

Google this is further complicated as this project is called pi-hole and the android version is called pie. search results are just a mess

Can you try using the address pi.hole as that will refer to the internal address and reply with the results ?

nope, does not work :frowning:

So the private DNS feature in Pie is meant for DoH like what is available from cloudflare I don't think it is intended for use such as this you may need to use an app to have your own dns applied system wide.

Try turning off Private DNS.

interesting idea. but no, also didn't work :frowning:

Soo... what is your phone using as DNS server without any adjustments ?

If it uses the Google DNS servers then just redirect them to your Pi-Hole IP at your router

Yeah, true, also an option.

But because of this I just configured the pi hole as primary DNS and it works as well.

A petty Google introduced that change, though
