So i blocked the IP for my Samsung SmartTV in my router admin (Orbi) using access control. Which is working as the TV internet is not working for any apps.
However today I checked my Query Log on Pihole and my TV is the top client (for the day), with no internet access, shouldn't the device not be querying? I am thinking I just misunderstood what would happen as the TV is clearly trying to query but since it's blocked those requests are getting rejected but showing in PiHole because its being attempted.
Not sure what you have done here. Have you prevented the TV from obtaining an IP on your network? If not, what IP have you blocked and what is the goal?
If you want the TV to not have internet access, would it not be more reliable to not provide the TV the login credentials to your home network?
Yes the TV Has an IP and I'm blocking it from the internet from the router. But I think my best bet is just factory re-settng the TV and not joining the network.
Going to mark this as solved since I sort of answered my own question while typing this out.
This would explain why the TV is still making DNS queries. It doesn't "know" that is cannot reach the internet, and it doesn't need to get to the internet to get to the Pi-hole DNS server. So, it queries for the domains it wants to resolve, and then can't reach them. This likely drives it into a query frenzy (not uncommon when devices can't reach their desired destination).
