Found this page while trying to find out why I could no longer update the LTSPICE software using Arch AUR.
Turns out the updating process has to download over 8000 small files and each download results in a DNS query.
I'm not complaining about your solution, but letting you know that there is at least one use case where the default setting causes breakage.
The Arch AUR maintains it's own fork of Pi-hole.
That sounds like a badly designed download system then. Each file should not require it's own DNS lookup.
The AUR doesn't have anything to do with that installation of the Pi-hole, just the source of the package that caused the rate limiting.
Yeah, this is the only time I have noticed this triggering.
