Static IP/DNS question?

Hello and Happy New Year to everybody,

I have a home network with a mix of DHCP (most with reserved IP addresses) and static IP addresses such as a printer and some other devices.

I run Pi-Hole on a Raspberry Pi and my router acts as the DHCP Server.

Obviously for those with a static IP I point their DNS directly towards the Pi but am wondering if it would work if I pointed those same devices towards my router which is acting as the gateway and if the router whose Primary DNS is pointing at the Pi for resolution would by proxy point them towards the Pi?

Why? Well if at any point the Pi fails or I change my mind and want to go back to a ‘standard’ DNS solution for whatever reason it would make things much easier to just change the router DNS config to point those static IP devices elsewhere without going into each & every static device and changing its DNS setting?

I believe that with DHCP the router acting as the gateway passes on the Primary & Secondary DNS Servers by just having its IP address as the gateway but would this work a similar way for those static devices?

Thanks & kind regards,

That should work if you point your router's DNS to the pi.

Yes, that will work. Or you change the DHCP setting and let the clients know the IP of your Pi (as DNS)
