Pixel 5 No Internet while running Pi-Hole and Unbound

Expected Behaviour:

  • Pixel 5 running android 11 should be able to connect to the AC1750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router and navigate the internet while Pi-Hole blocks and Unbound does whatever it does.

Actual Behaviour:

  • Pixel 5 is connecting but showing a "No Internet" error.

Debug Token:

Some Setup Info

  • Pi Hole and Unbound are running on an Ubuntu LXC on Proxmox with a static IP
  • Router has DHCP DNS set to Pi Hole IP
  • All other devices are connected and working, but ads on msn are still shown.
  • Pi Hole has ONLY Unbound as a forwarded DNS

Other Things I've Tried

  • Rebooting
  • Toggling Wifi
  • Adding common allowlisted domains

If you need more info let me know! :relaxed:

If you tail the pihole log with pihole -t and launch a browser window or app on the Pixel 5, do you see a burst of activity in the log tail from that device?

Yep! Although it looks like the connectivity issue resolved itself after running pihole -d? (Not actually sure why its working now). I'm still seeing ads on https://msn.com and the banner ads on https://ads-blocker.com/testing/ however on all devices.

I think I've figured out the original issue, so here's a follow up post with some details on that.

During debugging before making this post I ran pihole reconfigure which reset the forwarded DNS back to google's. This is why I think the connection started working. I then reset the DNS to 127.0.0.1#5335 instead of 192.168.x.x#5335 like it was before. I think this is what fixed the original issue. And now I just need to build out my blocklist like jfb mentioned.

Hopefully this is helpful if anyone else runs into this, and thanks jfb for the help!
