Pi-hole status unknown

Expected Behaviour:

Status to show as Active and settings in the interface saved

Actual Behaviour:

Status shows as "unknown" and interface changes are not saved

I used the instructions in this page (Redirecting...) to configure nginx (not running as root)

I can access /admin and login but the status is showing as "unknown" and I don't seem to be able to make changes to the interface. I haven't tried to change a lot. Just wanted to change to a custom DNS server but the settings wont save.

Just checked the nginx error log and found the following:

*12 FastCGI sent in stderr: "PHP message: PHP Warning: unlink(../custom_disable_timer): No such file or directory in /var/www/html/admin/api.php on line 47" while reading response header from upstream, client: 192.168.1.100, server: pihole.lan, request: "GET /admin/api.php?enable&token=qYT3A4TT6SekENzvruGe%3BvXGcP25sjIo24b8fXNHj5o%3D HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/run/php/php7.0-fpm.sock:", host: "pihole.lan", referrer: "http://pihole.lan/admin/index.php"

We can't fully support that configuration, as the guide notes:

This is an unsupported configuration created by the community

That warning is just a warning, not an error.
