Dig error using dnscrypt-proxy "Truncated, retrying in TCP mode"

I'm running pihole-ftl (port 53) and dnscrypt-proxy (port 54) on a raspberry pi zero w installed with raspbian stretch. When run dig pointing at pihole-ftl, the first line of the output shows this: ;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode Note that this doesn't show up when I point dig at dnscrypt-proxy.
