Pi-hole FTL v5.8.1 Hotfix release

Originally published at: https://pi-hole.net/2021/04/21/pi-hole-ftl-v5-8-1-hotfix-release/

We have just pushed a hotfix release for FTL which should hopefully resolve some database issues that we have been seeing reported.

If you have been affected by issues with the database (not everyone has), the general advice is to mv the database (/etc/pihole/pihole-FTL.db) to a .bak if you’d like, else just rm it, and then let pihole-FTL build a new one

Changelog
  • Don’t try to terminate threads when we never launched them #1115
  • Give threads a bit more time to shut down properly #1112
  • Fix database update to version 7 reporting error #1108

I removed the old FTL with

sudo rm /etc/pihole/pihole-FTL.db

but when I enter pihole-FTL it tells me

FATAL: Opening of FTL log (/var/log/pihole-FTL.log) failed!
Make sure it exists and is writeable by user ubuntu

Any ideas how to fix it? I run Ubuntu 20.04.2 on my Raspberry Pi 4 B.

You should never do this. Run

sudo service pihole-FTL restart

instead.

This was a good update indeed.
Tested with DNS benchmark on FTL 5.8 and it was dead slow.
Tested with DNS benchmark on FTL 5.8.1 and it now is equal to or outperforms prior versions.
