Lookup of own DNS entry fails

Hi,

my Pi-Hole has the IP-Adress 192.168.178.200

When i perform a nslookup, i get an answer like 127.0.1.1 (taken from the /etc/hosts of the Pi-hole following the usual "hosts, bind order"); so i can't reach the WebUI using the Hostname.

I have now created a "Local DNS Record" which points to the right IP-Adress.

I know that's a little bit weird to administrate a DNS Server using it's own Services. But Adminal Ackbar also think "It's a trap"...?!?

I'm not sure I understand your problem.

Your nslookup returned an IP address, so technically, it succeeded.

Why do you consider this a failure?

Hi,

yes, but it returned the localhost IP Adress.

When i enter https://mypihole.mylan.local/admin/ in my browser, i got no answer because mypihole will be resolved to 127.0.1.1.

That means, the Windows-Host i use will try to access itself instead of my Pi-Hole.

You have to set a Local DNS Record which points the Hostname mypihole to the LAN IP Adress (in my case 192.168.178.200).

Could you share the full output of that nslookup?

Hi,

As you see, the pihole will return it's localhost address which is taken from /etc/hosts

In this case, you cannot reach the WebUI using the host name. The http(s) Requests are send to the Client PC instead of the Pi-hole.

A good practice is to create a local entry in the WebUI which points the Hostname of the Pi-hole to it's LAN Address.

Thanks for the screenshot.
Now, that reveals that you are using pihole as a name.
pihole is not a name that Pi-hole creates - it's entirely up to you to correctly set up resolution for that name.

A default Pi-hole installation will create the appropriate definitions to make its web UI available at http://pi.hole/admin:
install-complete

When it comes to DNS resolution of the machine that hosts your Pi-hole, you have a choice of making use of Pi-hole or some public DNS, see Correct Resolv.conf entry in pihole 5.11.
