How to add default local domain (home.lan) to names for LAN machines?

In the Local DNS records I have added a few machines that I'd like to resolve from all of the home computers.

They are something like -> vero.home.lan 192.168.1.14 and they work very well in both any browser window or terminal when I use the FQDN eg ping vero.home.lan -> pings 192.168.1.14

What I wish to achieve is to have the same hosts resolved also when use the hostname without the .home.lan part.

So I'd like to obtain -> ping vero -> ping 192.168.1.14

Is this possible? If so how?
Is it wise it hides any problems?

You could try expand-host, but there are certain limitations:

Clients unable to resolve Pi-Hole hostname

By default, Pi-hole's embdedded dnsmasq would only automatically add DNS records for a simple hostname expanded by the local search domain if a DHCP client would claim that hostname during DHCP lease negotiation. Any manual DNS definitions (including CNAMEs, PTRs, SRVs, etc.) would be added as is, i.e without considering the search domain. You may try to enable expand-hosts as a custom configuration option, but note that according to dnsmasq documentation, this won't work for all definition ty…

If I understand your suggestion that would append the domain to queries only on the same machine on which I have edited the resolv.conf right?

That is correct, similar things can be done on Windows as well as linux (and likely macOS).
