Stuff from Ubiquiti UniFi has it too on their Router models and you can use Unbound in OPNsense for the same purpose just like pfBlockerNG in pfSense... but...
Funny to see that Fritz has finally startet a development as the request is already a few years old.
But i don't care. The possibilities by Pihole are much more in comparision to the Fritzbox.
But I see another need for future AdBlockers. The increasingly upcoming scripted ads are a real problem as many magazins has started the fight against AdBlockers with the advantage of being ahead of DNS blocking.
At least for the German models, FritzOS has supported filtering of domains ever since 84.05.05 released in 2011.
Back then, it was advertised as 'Kindersicherung'.
Current FritzOS releases list it as 'Internetseiten filtern' in a profile's filter section.
However, it has been limited to a single manual list capped at 500 entries, and enabling/disabling a fixed blocklist subscription (BPjM) for content inappropiate for young ones. I remember it to have been quite buggy at first, e.g. filtering only A records (IPv4) and HTTP requests.
It would seem that 8.40 now extends that capability by allowing subscriptions to arbitrary blocklists. I'd still expect entries to be capped, according to a specific Fritzbox model's memory restrictions.
It's not really a competition. The goal is to allow users to control their own data and their own networks. How they do that is up to them, more options are better.
I've said many times before, we don't have any reason to 'sell' you on Pi-hole, but that's not true of almost all of the other options.
