So I switched to the branch recommended in this, thread after it was merged back in:
Coro:
Yes
DL6ER:
No branch is called dev , core and FTL are called development . web is called devel due to historical reasons (fork of AdminLTE). There is a shortcut called
pihole checkout dev
(so without any ftl , web , etc. target) which automatically selects the correct branch for each and does everything in one go.
So I followed these steps, and things were working fine for awhile. Was this not the correct course of actions?
Correct, that is what I was told I should do. See my post above.

This is correct. Something else must be broken.
Please add
DEBUG_LOCKS=true
DEBUG_DATABASE=true
to the file /etc/pihole/pihole-FTL.conf (create if it does not exist) and run
pihole restartdns
Next time the crash happens, please check your pihole-FTL.log log file. It may be necessary to upload the entire file (or send it to me via PM or email) in case you don't see anything obvious.
I'll restore back to the dev branch tonight, and report back. I'd do it now, but I fear my wife and kids wouldn't be too happy with me
DL6ER:
pihole checkout dev
I've updated one of my piholes. I'll report back when I have an update.
It just failed out. I tried to run pihole -d, but because dns resolution was down, it failed to do the upload.
There was a crash reported in the log. I'll send you a PM with the details.

@ubenmackin Do you have any news for us?
Looks like the latest pull from the dev branch has fixed this issue. Thanks for the assistance!
