Feature request/s for PiHole

So all this recent stuff going on with updating.....

I used teleporter to backup .... what exactly?

I lost my list of blocked sites, the list of my static IP addresses.

WHAT does teleporter backup?

Ok, I seem to remember something about the static IP range.
There was a problem with one which has - instead of :

Ok, I see that teleport does NOT backup the custom lists.

Teleport does not backup custom list

It would be nice if somewhere you could do just that.
Make a backup of the list.

Personally, teleport is only part of the backup scheme for my systems. That said, the Pi-hole v5.0 teleporter backup includes the custom.list file.

Have you verified this yourself, or are you again basing your topic on an old post from the beginning of 2021?

Yes, it does.

You need to look at the dates of the information you are basing your comments.

I am basing the statements on what HAS/DID happen to me.

I fluffed up and did something I shouldn't have.

I had a backup - be it 5 months old. Nothing had changed.

Trying to load the backup caused problems with a stored MAC address having - rather than : in it.
So I eventually got that part fixed, imported the backup (I think it was PiHole 5) and there were no blocked lists given.

This gave rise to me posting multiple requests asking why PiHole wasn't working.

I've now got it working - thankfully.
And the list of blocked sites has kinda grown, but that's beyond the scope of this.

I'll export the settings again so if ever this happens again, I will - I hope - have a working version of the backup to get back to.

Now, here I'll accept I am going a bit off topic.
This Incorrect MAC address issue.
I started using PiHole about the same time I totally rebuilt my home network.
The ROUTER, SWITCH and a WAP were all in the picture.

I'm not EXACTLY sure how I got the MAC addresses for ALL the devices, but I'd guess from the ROUTER, as it is the BIG BOY in the scheme of things and shows me all device's MAC addresses.

I would see the MAC address, drag the mouse over it, copy and paste it into PiHole's list.
That was..... 4 years ago.
NOT ONCE in the past 4 years has PiHole complained about the INCORRECT MAC address, and it has been rebooted a few times - as much as I would like to have run for that long nonstop.

So - to me - there is a problem that slipped through the cracks that allowed me to enter this WRONG MAC ADDRESS, way back when, and the first time I was told was a few weeks ago when all this stuff hit the fan.

Are you trolling on purpose?

No.

I am just really having a bad time.

I don't think these are possible.

If they are, please tell me how to use them.

I have had a recent lot of resetting up my PiHole.

Although teleport backsup your setting, I think it would be nice if there were option/s to back up the regex exclude list, the blocked domain list and any other lists the user makes.

I'm asking only because as much as I would like to have used my older backups there was a problem with the file in something a long way away form the banned list/s.

Resulting in my having to sit there and put all the entries in again.

While here, on the Domain management page, there are two buttons:
add to block list and add to allowed domains
And they are both BLUE.

Maybe make them different colours as like they are in the
Subscribed lists group management page.

Just saying.

Teleporter backup also contains minimal version of the gravity database, which includes all your lists.

Yes, but I was stuck between a rock and hard place.

The backups were corrupt and couldn't be used.

So their contained lists were not usable.

I'm asking for an option to export them to (yet) another file.

Also handy if you know someone setting up PiHole.

You can give them your blocked list.

Using your teleport would also include your network stuff which is probably not a good thing to share.

You can select what to import on the import screen.
You can remove the config file from the archive before sharing it and you're no longer sharing your configuration with them.

Keep the lists in text file as a backup, now you can easily share them.

Teleporter is not a share tool, it's a backup and restore tool.

Yes, and I've just had my nose rubbed in the options when importing the teleport file.

So you are saying I would use my backup, and when importing to their machine I would exclude the groups and configuration.

Ok.

But - no offence - that IS using teleport as a share tool.

Which is why I (maybe/probably) overlooked it as an option and asked for the ability to export the block lists/etc.

So understand that is the reason I asked.

But I can (now) do that trick you just mentioned.
THOUGH it does go against what you said in the reply.

Similarly you could use any other backup product as a way of sharing your data with someone else. The product was designed as a backup tool, the fact that you can use it to share your data doesn't make it a share tool.

And that is why I asked.

How can I use other backup things when I don't know the structure of the file.

Yeah, it is a ZIP file.. Unzip it and look.

Is there any documentation on the structure of the file?
I'm asking because I don't know.

I don't think there is any need to document the file structure, especially since you can peak inside it to figure that out.

Hey, I was only asking.

I'll see what I can find/learn.

Unpack the teleporter file, and the archive within, and you will find what amounts to a bunch of text files containing configuration information.

I strongly recommend against editing these files and repacking them unless you absolutely know what you are doing. Personally, I would not do this, but seeing how much trouble you appear to cause for yourself, I suspect you will likely do this and determine that it is a Pi-hole bug, or needs somehow be a feature, or documented.

Believe me when I say after recent events PiHole will not be poked.

I'm curious and that I did one simple mistake that brought the whole thing down is enough warning that I am not going to try my luck on again if I can help it.

I don't need the grief.

If you want to play around or just learn I suggest you to set up a virtual machine with Pi-hole installed in it and do all your stuff there.
