I think I might have discovered the real cause for my network issues, a corrupted Firefox profile which was making the rest of the machine/connection hang every time it took a fit
Uninstalled FF, deleted all traces of the profiles, reinstalled and imported my backup profile, seems to be OK again
So every time FF hung, nothing else that connected to the net would connect either, IE etc, as soon as FF recovered so did everything else
Gotta love Windows
